Renewable Energy

Focusing on Renewables

Provisions have been made in the New Jersey Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act, N.J.S.A. 48.3-49 et seq., "to offer net metering to residential and small commercial customers that generate electricity.

Vineland Municipal Electric Utility (VMEU) uses the law as a guideline; except VMEU will not pay the customer for any bank energy credit at the end of the year. The credit will continue to roll over until the customer uses the bank energy.

Residential or Commercial Customers may request permission to “bank” energy credits by allowing the billing meter to subtract registration (spin backwards) during periods of excess generation. Under this option, the Commercial Customer only must agree to receive electrical service under VMEU’s Rate 20 (Commercial Rate Service with Demand Meter). The Customer will be subject to the applicable monthly minimum customer service charge under this rate which is currently $11.20, regardless of accrued energy credits.

There shall be no net payment(s) from VMEU to the Customer for excess energy or capacity delivered to VMEU’s system. However, energy credits can be accumulated indefinitely. Energy credits shall not be transferable to any other account or service location. In the event a meter must be changed, any accrued credits will be transferred to the new meter by adjusting the start reading accordingly.

Customer agrees to waive all rights to recover monies due to metering inaccuracies caused by allowing a conventional meter to spin in the “wrong” (reverse) direction. Specially designed meters that are designed to record in both directions are available and can be installed for additional cost to the Customer. VMEU can provide a cost upon request.

If the existing meter must be changed, or a special meter needs to be ordered, VMEU will charge the Customer a one-time fee of $60 for residential service, $120 for single-phase commercial service, and $240 for three-phase commercial service.
